INDOOR VS OUTDOOR SKYDIVES

The main difference between an indoor and outdoor skydive.

If you’re trying to decide whether you’re up for the simulated version, or the real deal. Maybe understanding these differences can help push you in the right direction.

First thing to note is ‘what is an indoor skydive?’ An indoor skydive is simply a simulated experience that focuses on the free-falling aspect of a regular skydive. Participants will learn how to balance themselves in the air as they are placed in a wind tunnel.

Regular tandem skydives, including our charity tandem skydives, or, ‘parachute jumps’, take you into the air at around 10,000ft and you will be tied to an instructor who does 90% of the work. Then simply fall out of the plane into a free-fall, before releasing the canopy and drifting down to the ground.

Let’s take a look at these differences in more depth:

The Sights!

  • After the free-falling aspect of a skydive, the instructor will release the canopy, and it is often described as the most peaceful and exciting part of the experience. Drifting towards the ground and enjoying the views. Something that can only be experienced through a real parachute jump.

The Heights

  • If you’re extremely afraid of heights, outdoor skydiving might now be ideal for you. However, a lot of people participate in these jumps to accomplish facing their fears and feel great about it after. The indoor skydive allows you to experience something like the free-falling aspect, but without being 10,000ft in the air

Age limits

  • Although there is no age maximum to outdoor skydive, there is a minimum and anyone under the age of 16 won’t be able to participate. This means if you are 15 and under, the indoor skydive will give you the opportunity to experience a form of skydiving.

The thrill

  • Of course, there is an element of thrill when it comes to being propelled into the air, even if it is indoor. However, nothing quite like jumping out of a plane at 10,000ft in the air. It’s about trying something new and exciting; skydiving should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The weather

  • The weather can impact your day in regard to an outdoor skydive, but it’s only really strong winds and rains that would stop you jumping. The airfield will endeavor to let you know in advance of your jump, but sometimes it won’t be known until the day. You can then get booked in at the next suitable date. With an indoor skydive, no matter what the weather is like, you can still participate.

Looking at these differences, it’s clear that nothing simulated is ever the same as experiencing the real thing. But if you are under 16 or exceptionally afraid of heights, the indoor skydive may be for you! For everyone else, we recommend taking the leap!
